Located within the Pediatric Center, the John A. Coleman School is approved by the State of New York Department of Health and the New York State Department of Education to provide educational services to children with special needs.
Early Intervention programming is developed based upon the individual needs of each child, in collaboration with the family and under the guidelines of the City of New York Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
Preschool services are made available for children who have or are suspected of having a disability pursuant to Section 4410 of Article 89 of the Education Law as determined by the Committee on Preschool Special Education of the local school district. School age services are offered as determined by the Committee on Special Education of the local school district. At Coleman all programming is developed in collaboration with the childs family.
Related services including counseling, occupational, physical, and speech / language therapies are presented by appropriately licensed and certified staff. Music therapy and adapted physical education are also available as part of the school program, as well as bedside instruction for those children who are unable to attend a classroom based program.
The Coleman School celebrates the individuality of every child, and respects and nurtures the cultural and religious backgrounds of all of its students and families. Special education services are at no direct cost to the families as funding is provided through county taxes and state funds, earmarked for special education services. However, parents are responsible for arranging for and paying the costs of any child care. While transportation may be provided, parents are encouraged to transport their own children and may be reimbursed at a rate per mile or a public service fare established by the municipality and approved by the Commissioner.
